A CAD / CAM method that was developed by W. Mormann and M. Brandestini at the University of Zurich in the year 1980, which was created for reconstructing tooth restorations. The machine is a time-saving, computer-aided process that allows dentists themselves to efficiently construct, produce and insert individual ceramic restorations, which all happens in a single appointment. The first applications were carried out successfully on patients in 1985.
What does all that mean to you? It means that you get your crown done in 1 day without the need for aggravating temporary crowns or a second appointment to cement your permanent porcelain crown.
The CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction) lets us make natural-looking, tooth-colored fillings and crowns ALL IN ONE DAY! Some restorations can even be completed in as little as one hour, while crowns usually take around an hour and a half. Crowns are usually cemented the same day they are started and often times patients don't have to have shots done if the tooth has already had a root canal done because there is no pain involved in that situation.
